"The Ship", Administration Building, University of Pretoria

Known as “The Ship” (or “Die Skip” in Afrikaans), this building is one of the most recognizable landmarks on the University of Pretoria’s Hatfield Campus.

Completed in 1968 and designed by architect Brian Sandrock, its bold, triangular shape and sharp lines make it look like a ship cutting through the landscape, which is how it got its nickname.

Built in a style known as Brutalism, the structure uses raw concrete and dramatic geometry to create a powerful visual impact. Originally built to house university management and administrative offices, it was later expanded to include the Senate Hall and executive offices.
